The brief

Student residences with a campus-grade network, study commons and access control, ready for move-in weekend.

Move-in weekend does not slip. Nearly a thousand students would arrive with laptops, phones, consoles and streaming devices, and expect the network to carry all of it from the first hour. The village also needed access control, study commons and building systems that a housing office could run without a large staff.

How we built it

The approach.

  1. 01

    Designed for device density

Wireless was planned for several devices per bed, with access points placed by survey rather than by a rule of thumb.

  2. 02

    Repeatable rooms, faster build

Standard bedroom and bathroom layouts let crews work in a rhythm and let the network be installed the same way in every unit.

  3. 03

    Access control end to end

Card and mobile credentials were tested at every entry, suite and amenity door before handover to the housing office.

  4. 04

    A move-in rehearsal

Staff and our team walked the move-in route, tested elevators and loaded the network with test devices the week before students arrived.

The outcome.

“Students give you about an hour before they decide whether the Wi-Fi is good. We made sure it was good in the first minute.”
