The brief

Six pump stations re-powered and brought onto one control network without a single missed delivery of water.

The utility’s pump stations ran on aging electrical gear and controls that did not talk to each other. Each station had to stay in service while its switchgear, drives and control panels were replaced, and the new SCADA network had to bring all six onto one screen. Water customers would never forgive an outage blamed on an upgrade.

How we built it

The approach.

  1. 01

    One station at a time

Stations were upgraded in sequence, with temporary power and bypass pumping set and tested before any existing gear came out.

  2. 02

    Panels proven before they shipped

Control panels went through factory acceptance testing with the utility’s operators, so problems were found on a bench, not in a wet well.

  3. 03

    A secure control network

Stations are linked over a segmented network with redundant communications paths, and every signal was point-to-point checked.

  4. 04

    Operators in the loop

Each station passed site acceptance testing with the utility’s staff running the pumps from the new SCADA screens before sign-off.

The outcome.

6Stations modernized
0Missed water deliveries
100%I/O points checked end to end
1Control network for every station

“You do not get to turn the water off for a week. Every station had a bypass ready before we touched a breaker.”
