Battery Energy Storage Facility reaches mechanical completion

Enclosures set, inverters landed, the project substation built and the controls building wired. The plant now moves into commissioning ahead of its grid interconnection.

The Battery Energy Storage Facility, a 150 MW / 600 MWh plant we are delivering as EPC contractor for a confidential owner, has reached mechanical completion. Battery enclosures are set, inverters and transformers are landed and terminated, the project substation is built and the controls building is wired. The plant has moved into commissioning, the last stretch before its grid interconnection.

What mechanical completion means

Mechanical completion is the point where construction is physically done and the systems are ready to be tested as a plant, not as parts. For battery storage that means every enclosure anchored and grounded, every DC and AC cable landed and tested, every fire detection and suppression system installed, the medium-voltage collection system terminated and the substation ready to carry power to the grid.

Getting there took a field operation built around repetition and inspection. Foundations, enclosure sets, cabling and terminations moved across the yard in sequenced blocks, with each crew handing a finished block to the next. Our quality team inspected each block before turnover, checking torque, polarity, insulation resistance and grounding. Problems were fixed where they were found, not saved for a punch list.

Commissioning now underway

Over the coming weeks our commissioning team, working with the owner, the equipment manufacturers and the interconnecting utility, will:

  • Energize the collection system and the substation in planned steps.
  • Bring enclosures online block by block and verify battery management and thermal systems.
  • Test fire detection, ventilation and suppression interlocks on every enclosure.
  • Verify protection settings and relay coordination with the utility.
  • Prove the plant controller, the SCADA network and the data reaching the owner's operators.
  • Run the capacity and performance tests that support commercial operation.

A storage plant is hundreds of identical systems and one control network that ties them together. Mechanical completion means the systems are built right. Commissioning proves they act as one plant.

We thank the owner, the design team, our trade partners and every craft professional on the project. We look forward to handing over a plant that is ready for operations on its first day on the grid.
